In the old castle (alte burg) on Burggasse 8, local Gestapo had a headquarter between 1938 and 1945. Just as in other headquarters there were both cells and interrogation rooms and several of the prisoners were sent further on to, for instance, Mauthausen and Dachau.
Current status: Preserved (2011).
Address: Burggasse 8, 9020 Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.
Get there: Walk from central Klagenfurt.
Follow up in books: Höhne, Heinz: The Order of the Death’s Head: The story of Hitler’s SS (1969).
In 2011, the former offices and interrogation rooms are used for municipal purposes. The creation of museums and monuments in all the places where Gestapo had headquarters would perhaps be unreasonable. But in Klagenfurt there is not even a small discrete tablet that mentions that Gestapo had a headquarter in the premises.
