Outside Halbe, about thirty kilometres southeast of Berlin, is Germany’s largest war cemetery with about 22,000 German soldiers who died in and around Halbe in late April, early May 1945. The German 9th army was literally annihiliated around Halbe by the Soviet Red army.

The majority of the graves contain unidentified bodies. Even nowadays bodies are occasionally found at the battlefields around Halbe and brought to the final resting at the cemetery.
