Treptower Park

In this cemetery in former East Berlin about 5,000 of the approximately 80,000 Soviet soldiers who died during the battle of Berlin in the spring of 1945 are buried. It was inaugurated in 1949 on the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s capitulation and consists of several Socialist style monuments.

Current status: Cemetery (2006).

Address: Puschkinallee 12, 12435 Berlin.

Get there: Metro to Treptower Park Station.

My comment:

The Cemetery is controversial since East Germany later became a Soviet puppet state. But given that the Red Army strongly contributed to defeating Nazi Germany, it is for the time being not a topic worth bringing up.

Follow up in books: Beever, Antony: Berlin: The Downfall 1945 (2004).
