In the former Misjonhotellet in central Trondheim Gestapo had its local headquarters. The head of the Gestapo in Trondheim was obersturmbannführer, Gerhard Flesch, who previously served in an einsatzkommando in Poland. Flesch quickly became known for his brutality and participated in sharpened interrogations of prisoners. In the basement there were prison cells where murder were committed from time to time. Flesch also worked closely with Henry Rinnan, whose ”band” (Sonderabteilung Lola) of Norwegian collaborators revealed Norwegian agents and members of the resistance movement. Flesch was arrested after the war, tried, sentenced to death and executed at Kristiansten fortress in Trondheim, February 1948.
Current status: Preserved (2017).
Address: Kongens gate 26, 7011 Trondheim.
Get there: Walk from central Trondheim.
Follow up in books: Höhne, Heinz: The Order of the Death’s Head: The story of Hitler’s SS (1969).
In the mid-eighties, the hotel changed its owner and name and it has since been called hotel Augustin. To my knowledge, the basement still exists and thus the prison cells, although not in their original condition. At the Justice Museum in Trondheim there is an interesting exhibition about the Gestapo and the Misjonshotellet, including a reconstructed prison cell.
